Hi guys, I've heard that tipping at check in can result in a room upgrade up to a suite! I was wondering have any of you experienced this? If so what hotel and how much did you tip? Also what was your upgrade?

I usually tip $20-$50. Get a room upgrade probably 50% of the time. Almost always get exactly the room location I ask for (high floor with a view).

$300 tip seems like alot! Might as well pay for the upgrade upfront lol.

Just tell the front desk clerk that you have a $20-$50 tip for them for a complimentary upgrade. The amount depends on the hotel, higher end, higher tip. Just remember you're not in the CIA, the clerk isn't risking their job to give you an upgrade. Management gives them discretion to give upgrades, in fact for really big upgrades they've had go talk to a manager, to earn that tip. Just don't be a douche that's hides a folded up $20 bill in between their ID and credit card, then starts whispering to them about an upgrade.

Couldn't disagree more! I have been upgraded to a 2 bed room suite at Harrahs, The "Bermuda" suite at Flamingo, had a friend without a players card get upgraded to a Metropolitan Suite at Flamingo when they checked in late one night. I know @timchuk got upgraded to a Salon Suite at Bellagio. So I call bullshit

I got upgraded to a penthouse suite on my wedding night for free and I had paid for a spa tower room. I didn't even ask for it they seen us in our wedding gear and they wished us congrats. Very nice touch by an awesome hotel.

Keep in mind now most hotels are trying to monetize these upgrades (upsell you at checkin) so getting one "free" is less and less likely
